Greece is having a new channel for business cooperation with Canada as the Toronto Business Development Centre (TBDC) expands its presence in the country, seeking to bring more Greek startups and established companies into the North American market.

Speaking to Naftemporiki, TBDC Strategic Advisor Yannis Stamatakos outlined the organisation’s plans in Greece, highlighted growing interest in Greek companies — particularly in the defence sector — and described its ambition to serve as a bridge for two-way investment and innovation between Greece and Canada.

TBDC, one of Canada’s longest-running business accelerators, places significant emphasis on the European market and also collaborates with the European Innovation Council.

“The presence of the Toronto Business Development Centre in Europe began about three years ago,” Stamatakos said. “Since then, we have been visiting European countries with the goal of bringing startups and mature startups to Ontario. Of course, we also attract mature startups from around the world.”

Founded 36 years ago, TBDC is a non-profit organisation funded by the federal government of Canada, the government of Ontario and the City of Toronto.

“It started as an organisation helping small companies establish themselves in Ontario and has evolved into a platform that brings dozens of companies and startups to the province every year,” he said.

According to Stamatakos, TBDC has supported more than 10,000 companies from 71 countries in establishing operations in Ontario over the past 36 years.

“Greece is on our map,” he said. “We began our expansion efforts in Eastern Europe and, given my Greek background, it was only a matter of time before we came to Greece.”

A TBDC delegation led by its president visited Greece last October, meeting with approximately 26 to 27 Greek startups as part of its initial outreach efforts.

“I was impressed by the quality of the Greek startups and also by the calibre of the people who created them,” Stamatakos said. “That first contact confirmed that Greece has a dynamic entrepreneurial ecosystem with significant potential for international growth.”
