Hellas Gold highlights the decisive role of critical metals—particularly copper—in Europe’s energy transition through a new investment in electrification for heavy ore transportation, carried out in collaboration with leading international and domestic partners, stating that “we move electrically, we move into the future.”

According to the subsidiary of Canadian multinational Eldorado Gold, which operates mining activities in Northern Greece, “the Olympias–Stratoni route is being transformed into an almost silent, zero-emissions journey, representing another step towards a more sustainable mining operation.” The company describes this as a pioneering investment in Greece, and particularly in the mining sector.

The initiative forms part of Hellas Gold’s broader strategic framework to reduce its carbon footprint and integrate innovative, sustainable technologies across all aspects of its operations. At the same time, it underscores the critical role of metals—especially copper—in enabling technologies that support the energy transition, such as electrification, renewable energy sources, and modern electricity interconnection networks.

Sustainable mining activity

In this context, Michalis Papasotiriou, Deputy General Manager and Head of Operations, stated that “the introduction of electrification in heavy ore transportation represents another meaningful step towards sustainable mining activity in our country. This initiative reflects our commitment to being at the forefront of the energy transition, linking mining activity—the starting point—with modern technologies—the end product—highlighting the critical role of mineral raw materials, and particularly metals, in building a sustainable future.”

Hellas Gold is adding two fully electric heavy-duty Actros e600 Pro Cabin trucks by Mercedes-Benz to its fleet, designed for demanding continuous-operation conditions. The vehicles are used to transport ore from the Olympias mine to Hellas Gold’s port facility in Stratoni.

In addition, the trucks are equipped with advanced operational and safety systems, including a digital Pre-Start Check with an integrated alcohol interlock, real-time dynamic load weighing, and other features that reduce maintenance needs while enhancing road safety.

Schmitz Cargobull developed the trailer unit—a tri-axle tipping semitrailer—marking a milestone as the first such combination in Greece of a tipping semitrailer paired with a zero internal combustion engine vehicle.
