Greece has renewed its participation in the U.S. Coast Guard’s QUALSHIP 21 initiative for the 2026-2027 period, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy said after receiving notification from the U.S. Coast Guard’s Office of Commercial Vessel Compliance.
Launched in 2001, the QUALSHIP 21 initiative establishes a quality assessment and incentive program for foreign-flagged vessels calling at U.S. ports. According to the ministry, Greece’s renewed participation recognizes the country as a Quality Flag State, reflecting the strong performance of Greek-flagged vessels during U.S. Coast Guard Port State Control inspections over the past three years.
During that period, the detention rate for Greek-flagged vessels inspected at U.S. ports remained below 1%, meeting a key eligibility requirement set by the U.S. maritime authorities for participation in the program.
The QUALSHIP 21 initiative aims to eliminate substandard shipping while rewarding flag administrations, shipowners and vessels that demonstrate a strong commitment to maritime safety, security and quality shipping standards.
Under the renewed designation, Greek-flagged vessels that meet the U.S. Coast Guard’s eligibility criteria and receive QUALSHIP 21 status will benefit from operational incentives when calling at U.S. ports, including fewer Port State Control inspections for cargo ships, reduced inspection scope for tankers and the issuance of a quality certificate.
