Nordea’s shipping finance division expects lending activity to strengthen during the year, driven by new client relationships and financing for newbuild vessels.

The bank’s shipping loan portfolio remained broadly stable in the second quarter at 4.53 billion euros, compared with 4.58 billion euros at the end of the first quarter. Thor-Erik Bech, Nordea’s global head of shipping, said commitments are increasing, reflecting stronger customer activity and a larger pipeline of newbuilding projects.

Exposure to the tanker segment remained unchanged at 1.6 billion euros, while lending to gas carriers increased to 900 million euros and dry cargo shipping rose to 800 million euros.

Nordea recently participated in financing transactions involving Performance Shipping, Diana Shipping and Klaveness Combination Carriers.
