Greece and North Macedonia have reaffirmed their commitment to the construction of a natural gas interconnector between the two countries, according to a statement issued after a meeting held in Skopje.
The discussions brought together DESFA CEO Maria Sferruzza, North Macedonia’s Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources Minister, Sanja Bozinovska, and Nedim Rama, NOMAGAS CEO. According to the statement, construction works are progressing on both sides of the border and the project remains on schedule, with completion targeted for next year.
The interconnector is considered a strategic project for regional energy cooperation, giving North Macedonia direct access to diversified gas supplies via Greece, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) imported through the Revithoussa terminal and the Alexandroupolis FSRU. The new link is expected to strengthen North Macedonia’s energy security and enhance the resilience and flexibility of the wider regional gas system. It also forms part of the Vertical Gas Corridor, a regional initiative aimed at increasing natural gas flows from Greece towards the Balkans and Central Europe, with planned expansion towards Serbia expected to further improve regional connectivity and market integration.
The project aligns with the European Union’s strategy to diversify energy sources and routes, reduce dependency risks and strengthen cross-border infrastructure. Officials also stressed the importance of coordination between transmission system operators, governments and European institutions to ensure timely delivery of the project and maximise its regional impact.
DESFA’s CEO said the company remains committed to close cooperation with NOMAGAS and all stakeholders to ensure successful completion of the interconnection, highlighting Greece’s role as an emerging energy gateway for Southeast and Central Europe through interconnected gas infrastructure and the development of the Vertical Corridor.
