Greek shipowners are running an extensive investment programme in newbuild commercial vessels, with deliveries accelerating in recent years, according to data shared by Xclusiv Shipbrokers.

From 2024 through the end of June 2026, a total of 464 vessels of all types have been delivered in line with shipbuilding contract schedules.

At the same time, the Greek-controlled orderbook stands at 962 vessels under construction across all conventional segments, with deliveries scheduled from the second half of 2026 through 2029. This brings the total investment programme to 1,426 newbuildings. When including 23 offshore vessels and four pure car carriers, the total rises to 1,453 ships.

The scale of the programme exceeds even the peak of the 2004–2008 shipping boom, underscoring the continued expansion of Greek shipping globally.

According to Xclusiv data, Greek shipowners currently have 434 tankers on order, representing 28% of the global tanker orderbook. They also have 216 bulk carriers (13% share), 216 container ships (13%), 53 LNG carriers (16%), and 43 LPG carriers (13%).

Deliveries over the past two and a half years include 170 bulk carriers, 183 tankers, 47 container vessels, 30 LPG carriers, and 34 LNG carriers.

Globally, the orderbook includes 1,642 bulk carriers (11% of the active fleet), 1,535 tankers (19%), 1,680 container ships (23.5%), around 907 LNG carriers in operation with a further 338 on order (37.3% of the fleet), and 339 LPG carriers under construction (18.2%).

The president of the Union of Greek Shipowners Melina Travlou said the scale of investment reflects shipowners’ confidence in the sector.

“It means we firmly believe in this industry,” she said, adding that the fleet is being renewed with a focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility.
