The Athens stock market extended its upward momentum on Friday, with buyers maintaining control and pushing the General Index firmly above the 2,500-point level.

The Greek market, supported by positive sentiment abroad and a strong flow of domestic corporate developments, is brushing off profit-taking pressures and climbing to its highest levels since November 2009, delivering gains of around 18% since the start of the year.

In intraday trade, the Euronext Athens General Index rose a further 0.63% to 2,521.14 points, adding more than 15 points compared with Thursday’s close of 2,505.37. Trading turnover remained subdued at around 7 million due to the closure of Wall Street for Independence Day.

The benchmark index entered the final session of the week after having reached 2,505 points on Thursday, marking both a new yearly high and a 17-year peak. At the same time, the combined market capitalisation of listed companies approached 185 billion euros for the first time since December 2007, a 19-year high.

The rally, which has delivered average gains of 18% so far this year, is closely linked to sustained investor optimism in Greek equities.

Business deals, capital market transactions totalling 7.7 billion in 2026, generous dividend payouts and strong fundamentals are underpinning the move, as Athens moves closer to reclassification into developed markets.

However, analysts noted that consolidation and profit-taking could emerge after such strong gains, a typical feature of any bull market, particularly as the current uptrend enters its sixth year.

Investor attention is also turning to Mevaco, which is trading ex-dividend for its 0.25 euros per share payout (dividend yield 8.8%).

Meanwhile, shareholders of Fais Group and ELTON will secure their dividend entitlement, with ex-dividend dates scheduled for Monday.

Wall Street remained closed due to Independence Day.

On Thursday, despite pressure on technology stocks, the Dow Jones still hit a new all-time high, rising 1.14% to 52,900 points.
