A delegation from the Republic of Moldova and Romania visited Thessaloniki Port Authority (ThPA S.A.) as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation in transport and connectivity across the wider Southeast European region.
The delegation included Vladimir Bolea, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development of the Republic of Moldova, Andrei Popov, Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Greece, and George Palazi, Honorary Consul of Moldova in Thessaloniki. The meeting was attended by Dr. Ioannis Tsaras, Chief Executive Officer of ThPA S.A., along with company executives.
Discussions focused on prospects for developing synergies aimed at strengthening and enhancing the resilience of supply chains serving the broader Balkan region. Particular emphasis was placed on leveraging Moldova’s geographical position as an emerging connectivity hub linked to European transport networks, combined with the role of the Port of Thessaloniki as a gateway to Southeast Europe and the Mediterranean.
The parties also highlighted opportunities for the development of logistics and transport infrastructure in Moldova, as well as the role of international investment and expertise in accelerating the modernization of transport networks.
Special emphasis was also placed on the need to expedite critical infrastructure projects, strengthen the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), and improve rail and cross-border connections, which were identified as common priorities for faster and more efficient access to regional markets. Within this framework, the potential for promoting intermodal transport solutions was examined, with the aim of reducing transit times and developing more competitive transport services.
The delegation was given a tour of the port facilities and briefed on the investments currently underway to strategically upgrade the port, with the expansion of Pier 6 serving as the flagship project. Upon completion, the Port of Thessaloniki will significantly enhance its cargo-handling capacity, further consolidating its role as a critical hub for Southeast Europe and a reliable partner in supporting regional supply chains.
The meeting reaffirmed the importance of strengthening regional cooperation and developing modern, resilient infrastructure as key prerequisites for improving connectivity and promoting economic growth across the wider region.
