The importance of the human factor in shaping the future of shipping was highlighted by Elpi Petraki, President of WISTA International and Secretary General of the Hellenic Shortsea Shipowners Association, in a post marking the conclusion of Posidonia 2026.

According to Petraki, discussions held during the exhibition confirmed that, despite rapid technological advances and the growing use of artificial intelligence, the future of the maritime sector will ultimately be determined by people.

She stressed the need to attract younger generations to the shipping industry and to support both seafarers and shore-based professionals as the sector navigates a period of transformation.

Petraki took part in a series of events and conferences during Posidonia, including the WMU Conference, the BIMCO Crewing the Future, the TradeWinds Shipowners Forum, the conference of HELMEPA and events organised by WISTA Hellas.
