The Port of Patras has the potential to become a major engine of economic growth, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Vasilis Kikilias, said, following a briefing on the port’s approved master plan at the headquarters of the Patras Port Authority.
“The Port of Patras can offer our children a better future,” Kikilias said, describing the master plan as a roadmap that creates significant opportunities for both the port and the city.
He said the government, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, the Patras Port Authority and local stakeholders would work together to implement projects that generate wealth, create more and better-paid jobs, and strengthen the local economy.
“Now that the master plan has been approved, we will move forward with implementing as many projects as possible, based on the available funding and on realistic rather than overly ambitious plans, because our goal is to support the region,” he said.
212-Berth Mega Yacht Marina
Highlighting one of the flagship projects included in the master plan, Kikilias said the planned 212-berth mega yacht marina could significantly boost the city’s tourism industry.
“At a time when ports across Greece are competing intensely for mega yacht berths, the development of a 212-berth marina in Patras will generate substantial revenue for the city, upgrade its tourism offering and activate a major part of the port,” he said.
He also pointed to ongoing efforts, financed by the Port Authority, to develop ship repair facilities within the port.
Kikilias argued that the port could once again become the economic catalyst for Patras, the Achaia region and western Greece, recalling the area’s previous role as a hub for manufacturing, logistics, industry and trade.
“The Port of Patras will thrive again in the coming years and become a pillar of growth and prosperity, first and foremost for the city’s residents and then for the Greek economy,” he said.
