Air conditioners are widely used in the Greek market and, in recent years, have increasingly served not only for cooling but also for heating. However, the latest trend is the growing adoption of HVAC systems.
HVAC – an acronym for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning – refers to the combination of equipment and systems designed to regulate indoor temperature, humidity and air quality, ensuring a stable and comfortable indoor climate.
According to ICAP CRIF, stronger construction activity and a high rate of building renovations, combined with the expansion of Greece’s tourism sector and the development of new or upgraded hotels and short-term rental properties, are supporting sales in the HVAC market.
At the same time, rising temperatures, more frequent and prolonged heatwaves, and a stronger focus on energy efficiency standards are accelerating the replacement and upgrading of existing HVAC installations, creating favorable conditions for sustained market growth.
Air conditioning market stabilizes
Stamatina Pantelaiou, Director of Sector Studies & Publications at ICAP CRIF, said that 2025 marked a year of stabilization for Greece’s air conditioning market, although performance varied across product categories, both in sales volumes and values, including central and semi-central systems as well as split units.
Sales of central air conditioning units increased by 14% in 2024 compared with 2023 and rose by a further 12% in 2025 from the previous year. Sales of semi-central air conditioning systems climbed 11% in 2024 versus 2023, with the market expected to expand by a further 13% in 2025.
Demand continues to be supported by growing interest in energy-efficient solutions for residential, commercial and business buildings.
Energy consumption trends
According to the latest Eurostat data, Greece ranks second in the European Union, behind Italy, in energy consumption for air conditioning.
Air conditioning, however, accounts for only a small share of household electricity use across the EU, representing just 0.6% of total consumption. The largest share, 62.5%, is used for space heating, followed by water heating and lighting.
Focus on energy-efficient technologies
Industry participants say competition is intensifying as companies seek to offer innovative cooling and heating solutions that help mitigate the effects of climate change and increasingly frequent extreme weather events.
They also expect the heat pump segment to expand further, supported both by government incentive programs and by rising consumer demand for more economical and environmentally friendly heating solutions, strengthening growth prospects for this product category and the broader HVAC market.
