The Piraeus Chamber of Commerce and Industry welcomed an initiative by Deputy Interior Minister for Macedonia and Thrace Kostas Gkioulekas aimed at strengthening the link between Greece’s maritime sector and Northern Greece’s economy.

According to a chamber statement, Greek shipping remains one of the strongest pillars of the national economy, combining global reach, expertise and competitiveness. The next major challenge, however, is not only to maintain the country’s leadership at sea but also to channel a larger share of shipping-related value creation into the domestic economy.

The statement highlighted the role of the Hellenic Shipyards Association in this effort, noting that it recently published its first manifesto outlining a strategy for the comprehensive revival of Greece’s shipbuilding industry and its supporting businesses.

Northern Greece Seen as Strategic Maritime Hub

The chamber said the geographical position of Macedonia and Thrace provides a natural advantage, connecting Aegean maritime routes with the markets of the Balkans and Central and Eastern Europe. The challenge, it added, is to translate that geographic advantage into economic gains through ports, transport infrastructure, industry, technology and human capital.

Thessaloniki, supported by the development of its port, could serve as a key intermodal transport hub linking maritime trade with rail and road networks across the Balkans. Investments in logistics, warehousing, digital services and green infrastructure could further strengthen its role as a commercial gateway to Southeast Europe.

At the same time, the ports of Kavala and Alexandroupolis are gaining strategic importance. Alexandroupolis in particular is emerging as a hub where maritime transport, energy security, international supply chains and shifting geopolitical dynamics converge.

Focus on Maritime Clusters and Industry Links

The chamber argued that ports alone are not sufficient to maximize economic benefits, stressing that value is created when broader maritime ecosystems develop around them.

Northern Greece, it said, has the necessary conditions to establish a dynamic maritime cluster bringing together shipping companies, export-oriented industries, ship repair activities, universities, research centers, startups and technology providers.

Drawing on international experience, the statement noted that successful maritime nations derive strength not only from their fleets but also from the wide range of services supporting them, including technical services, marine equipment, shipbuilding and repair, green technologies, education, insurance, finance and digital innovation.

The chamber pointed to the Maritime Hellas cluster initiative, supported by the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping, the Union of Greek Shipowners and the Piraeus Chamber, as an example of efforts to build an integrated national maritime ecosystem in which different regions can leverage their comparative advantages.

Under this model, Piraeus would continue to serve as an international shipping center, while Northern Greece would strengthen its role as a hub for industry, logistics and export-oriented activity.

Green Transition Creates New Opportunities

The chamber also highlighted the opportunities arising from shipping’s green transition, citing alternative fuels, vessel energy efficiency, port electrification, new technologies and circular economy projects as areas capable of attracting investment and creating specialized jobs.

Greece’s greatest asset remains the experience and international reputation of its shipping industry, the statement said, adding that closer links between shipping and the country’s productive sectors could generate greater benefits for Greek businesses, products and workers.

Northern Greece, it concluded, has the opportunity to become the northern development arm of Greek shipping, transforming maritime expertise into regional growth through a combination of industry, innovation and logistics.
