Strong national and European energy networks are essential to ensuring energy security and affordable prices for households and businesses, Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou said, adding that “Europe must not compromise” on the issue.
Upon his arrival at a meeting of EU energy ministers in Luxembourg, Papastavrou said the discussion is focused on grids and interconnections, adding that “the time for decisions has finally come.”
“Europe must move quickly towards a centralised planning framework that will enable a truly unified electricity market, not 27 fragmented markets,” he said.
He stressed that grids and interconnections are not merely a technical issue, but one of energy security, competitiveness and European cohesion, as they would help reduce price disparities between member states.
Papastavrou said the Greek government has been investing in grids and interconnections since 2019, adding that the recent successful share capital increase of IPTO will allow the operator to complete its investment programme.
He noted that once planned interconnections with Crete, the North Aegean, the Dodecanese and the Cyclades are completed, they are expected to deliver benefits of around 1 billion euros for Greek consumers.
“Strong national and European networks ensure energy security and affordable energy for citizens and businesses. Europe must not and should not make compromises,” he concluded.
