Vodafone Carrier Services is moving ahead with the construction of another high-capacity subsea fiber optic cable system in Greece. The new cable will connect Crete to the mainland, improving access to critical internet services.
Work on the new submarine fiber optic cable, called the Thetis Express, has already started, while a marine survey is also underway. The system will include two marine segments of 129 and 163 kilometers in length, as well as land connections via the island of Milos and landfall points in Crete and Attica.
Once commercially operational, the Thetis Express will be around 340 kilometres in total and connect carrier neutral data centres in both Heraklion, Crete, and Attika, Athens. It will be capable of transmitting up to 180 terabits of data per second – the equivalent of approximately 25 million users streaming 4K video at the same time.
Vodafone Greece already operates an extensive underwater and terrestrial optical fiber infrastructure network in the Aegean and Ionian Seas, connecting Attica with the Cyclades (Syros, Tinos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros and Santorini), the Dodecanese (Kos and Rhodes) and Crete, as well as Corfu with mainland Greece.
