Athens Metro introduces Greece’s first train braking energy recovery system

Athens Urban Rail Transport (STASY) has taken a major step toward improving energy efficiency and supporting the green transition of the capital’s public transport network by introducing the first regenerative braking energy recovery system ever installed on a Greek railway.

The new technology, deployed on Metro Line 1, captures the kinetic energy generated when trains brake, converts it into electricity and feeds it back into the public power grid. The system reduces energy that was previously wasted, lowers operating costs and improves the network’s overall energy efficiency.

The system entered trial operation in mid-July at the Neo Faliro traction substation, while a second installation at the Iraklio substation is expected to become operational next week.

Recovering 12.5% of Line 1’s annual electricity consumption

According to STASY’s estimates, the system will recover around 4,500 MWh of electricity annually on Line 1.

This represents approximately 12.5% of the line’s total yearly electricity consumption, delivering substantial energy cost savings. At the same time, the refurbishment of the traction substations at Neo Faliro and Iraklio is expected to improve the reliability of the power supply and reduce failures associated with ageing equipment.

4.1-million-euro investment

The project carries a budget of 4.1 million euros, is co-financed through the EU’s NSRF funding programme and is being implemented by Siemens Mobility S.A.

Completion is expected ahead of the contractual deadline of December 2026.

Next step: Metro Lines 2 and 3

Following the rollout on Line 1, STASY is already moving forward with plans to extend the regenerative braking energy recovery technology to Metro Lines 2 and 3, as part of its broader strategy to improve the sustainability and energy efficiency of Athens’ urban rail network.
