The US President Donald Trump has made clear that ending Europe’s reliance on Russian energy is a priority, US Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, said in a post on ‘X’.
“The European Union’s adoption of RePowerEU legislation to end all Russian gas imports by fall of 2027 is a step toward that goal. The United States stands ready to supply more reliable gas to our European partners through projects like the Vertical Corridor, which will leverage American and Greek infrastructure to grow our economies and power the future,” she added.
EU: Ban on Russian gas imports
The European Union on Monday formally adopted the regulation on phasing out Russian imports of both pipeline gas and liquified natural gas (LNG) into the EU.
A full ban will take effect for LNG imports from the beginning of 2027 and for pipeline gas imports from autumn 2027.
The measure makes legally binding the Union’s promise to cut ties with its former gas supplier, almost four years after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
