The shipyards of Perama once again demonstrate their capabilities in export activity.
After the recent sales of small ferry-type ships (slippers) to an Italian shipping company, it has now moved to the other side of the Atlantic and more specifically to Guyana, in South America.
The government of Guyana has acquired two small ro-pax ferries, built in Perama, with the aim of strengthening domestic coastal transport.
The “Aris IV” was the first of the two ships to arrive in Guyana, after a delivery trip lasting approximately one month from Piraeus, and is followed by the “Kalliopi N”, which is already on its way to the South American country.
As reported by AXSmarine, the vessels were acquired by the State of Guyana as part of a broader program to expand and modernize public ferry capacity.
The “Aris IV”, built in 2020, is a doubleender type and was built at the Atsalakis shipyards.
Before being sold, it mainly served the high-demand Perama-Salamina route.
The vessel, which has not yet been renamed, is 827 gt and is scheduled to operate on the
Parika-Supenaam route, which connects the so-called Region Three (Essequibo IslandsWest Demerara) with Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) via the Essequibo River.
With a length of 58.8 m and a width of 15.7 m, the “Aris IV” has a capacity of 81 CEUs or 19 heavy goods vehicles, as well as over 300 passengers, with a service speed of 10 knots.
The ship is considered to be the first amphibious ferry vessel to enter service in Guyana and represents a significant increase in capacity on one of the busiest domestic routes in the country.
The second ship, the “Kalliopi N”, is a landing craft type ferry, built in 2024, built at the Elthom shipyards of Perama on behalf of Agia Fotini Maritime, based in Salamis.
The ship, 49.94 m long and 17.10 m wide, had operated on the Salamina Megara line.
According to previous government statements, it is expected to join Region One (Barima-Waini).
This region, located in northwestern Guyana, relies heavily on river and coastal transport, and the introduction of a landing craft ferry is expected to significantly enhance the movement of passengers and vehicles between its scattered communities, AXSMarine pointed out.
