Up to 30 individuals had been arrested on Monday in a wide-ranging police operation in the greater Athens area aimed to dismantle a particularly active ring of pickpockets and purse snatchers in the Greek capital, blamed for hundreds of thefts.
Bus passengers and unsuspecting tourists in central Athens have been repeatedly targeted by such rings in the past.
