THEON International strengthened its presence at the Eurosatory defence exhibition in Paris by announcing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Safran Electronics & Defense to establish a joint venture focused on the design, development and commercialization of electro-optical and infrared systems for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The new venture will leverage the complementary capabilities of the two companies to develop next-generation optronic solutions, including lightweight stabilized gimbal systems weighing less than 8 kilograms, addressing growing demand for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and targeting capabilities across the defence and security markets.

“We highly value Safran’s decision to partner with THEON in one of the fastest-growing segments of the defence industry,” said Christian Hadjiminas, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of THEON. “This is a landmark move for THEON, combining our strengths with those of a global industry leader.”

The two companies aim to develop flexible, multi-platform compatible solutions capable of meeting a broad range of operational requirements while supporting the mass production of cost-effective systems.

Safran Electronics & Defense will contribute its leading expertise in Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) systems and electro-optical technologies, particularly in the field of stabilized gimbal systems.

THEON will bring its know-how in advanced sensors and electro-optical technologies to the partnership.

According to Alexandre Ziegler, Executive Vice President and Head of the Defense Division at Safran Electronics & Defense: “Our partnership with THEON reinforces Safran Electronics & Defense’s leadership in electro-optical systems by accelerating the development of next-generation, platform-agnostic solutions and delivering ISR capabilities across the full spectrum of missions and operational requirements. It also represents an important step toward strengthening European technological autonomy in a critical defence domain.”
