Greek-owned tanker operator IONIC is adopting a cautious stance on further fleet expansion despite the highly favorable conditions in the tanker market.
Speaking to Maritime Bridge Japan, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Dimitris Saracakis, said IONIC’s fleet currently consists of 18 vessels following the sale of an older tanker. At the same time, four newbuild vessels are under construction at Japanese shipyards, underscoring the company’s long-standing confidence in Japan’s shipbuilding industry.
Saracakis noted that while the tanker market continues to generate strong earnings, newbuilding prices remain at exceptionally high levels. In his view, current market conditions do not justify a more aggressive fleet growth strategy.
The approach reflects the company’s broader strategy of maintaining disciplined capital allocation and prudent investment management, despite the attractive returns currently available in the tanker segment.
