Progress in the development of onshore power supply (OPS) infrastructure at Italian ports was reviewed by representatives of the cruise industry, the Italian government and the energy sector during a CLIA Europe working meeting in Rome. CLIA Europe’s Executive Director is Nikos Mertzanidis.

The meeting brought together officials from Italy’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, executives from Costa Cruises and MSC Cruises, as well as consultants from McKinsey & Company. The discussion took place in the wake of the European Union’s new ports strategy, which identifies shore-side electricity connections for berthed vessels as a key tool for reducing emissions.

According to CLIA Europe, more than 50% of cruise ships are already equipped to connect to onshore power grids, with the share expected to exceed 75% by 2030. Italy is stepping up related investments, supported by nearly 800 million euros in European funding, as it seeks to accelerate the deployment of shore power infrastructure across its port network.
