Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Vassilis Kikilias visited the Port of Piraeus on Tuesday ahead of the peak summer holiday travel period, meeting coast guard officials to monitor security measures at the country’s largest port and across Greece.
Speaking after the visit, Kikilias said around 10.7 million passengers depart from Piraeus each year for the Greek islands, adding that hundreds of coast guard officers are deployed at the port and thousands more at ports nationwide to ensure the safety and smooth movement of travelers.
“Safety comes first for us,” he said, urging passengers to follow the instructions of coast guard officials.
Kikilias described Greece’s islands as one of the country’s key competitive advantages and urged travelers to cooperate with coast guard officers, who are tasked with protecting and assisting the public during the peak holiday season.
He added that ferry occupancy rates are expected to continue rising until August 15, reaching as high as 100%, and called on passengers to remain patient and follow the guidance of port authorities to help ensure smooth travel.
