Costamare, Kostis Konstantakopoulos-led firm, is reported to have entered into a landmark newbuilding agreement worth approximately 1.32 billion dollars, further strengthening its presence in the containership market.
According to shipbroking sources, the New York-listed Greek company is reportedly the buyer behind a series of 12 containerships with a capacity of 9,200 TEU, secured by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. (DSIC), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). If confirmed, the deal is considered particularly significant, as it is expected to be Costamare’s first shipbuilding contract offering the option of payment in Chinese yuan (RMB).
The same sources indicate that this choice is linked to the vessels’ intended employment on charter to Cosco Shipping Lines. Costamare has a 52-year track record and operates a fleet of 79 containerships, with a total capacity of approximately 551,000 TEU.
