“The new European Industrial Maritime Strategy is an important step towards repositioning the shipbuilding industry at the core of European industrial policy,” stressed Panos Xenokostas, president of the Association of Hellenic Shipyards, commenting on the presentation of the new European Union strategy for the maritime industry.
The EU initiative focuses on shipbuilding and ship repair activity, seeking to strengthen Europe’s industrial dominance and strategic autonomy, as well as to maintain critical production capabilities within the European industrial base.
At the same time, the strategy is directly linked to technological innovation, digital transformation and the transition of shipping to cleaner forms of energy.
The new European policy covers the entire value chain of shipbuilding activity – from shipbuilding and high-tech equipment to repair and maintenance services – and is directly linked to the transition of shipping to cleaner and digital technologies.
More specifically, it provides for:
- Supporting the digital and circular transformation of European shipyards, so that they maintain their global leadership in the construction of complex and technologically advanced ships.
- Creating the EU Industrial Maritime Value Chains Alliance, with the aim of strengthening Europe’s industrial dominance in critical technologies and new markets.
- Leveraging public demand and European financial instruments to strengthen European shipbuilding production and “Made in EU” innovation.
- Ensuring fair conditions of competition with third countries, in order to protect the European shipbuilding industry from distortions of the international market.
- Strengthening the role of the European Union in shaping international maritime rules, in order to ensure a level playing field for European shipping.
- Mobilising European, national and private capital for investments in fleet decarbonisation, technological innovation and defence capabilities.
- Supporting the shipbuilding of defence and dual-use ships, aiming to protect critical infrastructure and maritime supply chains.
The strategy aims to create new opportunities for businesses, SMEs and technology providers, while boosting employment in shipyards and maritime industrial clusters across Europe.
