The role of artificial intelligence (AI) in modern shipping operations was highlighted by Danaos Corporation CEO Dimitrios Vastarouchas, speaking at the Capital Link Cyprus Shipping Forum and the panel on “Shipping in the Age of Artificial Intelligence – Optimizing the Commercial and Operational Landscape”.
As he pointed out, AI can have a substantial impact on ship efficiency, through data analysis to optimize fuel consumption and overall performance, as well as on preventive maintenance, reducing breakdowns and unplanned delays.
At the same time, he stressed that intelligent systems can enhance commercial decision-making, offering better risk and market assessment.
For Danaos, however, he said the adoption of artificial intelligence is not an end in itself, but a strategic choice that must be based on a strong database, governance, compliance and clear return on investment.
