One seafarer was killed and four have been injured in attacks on two foreign-flagged tankers in the Persian Gulf and off the coast of Oman, while an attempted attack on a tanker of Greek interests and another foreign-flagged one was also recorded.
According to executives from the maritime security and risk management company Diaplous, there were 10 Greek-flagged ships and another 42 ships under Greek management in the wider area, a fact that intensifies the Greek shipping community’s concern for the safety of crews and ships.
UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) announced that an incident occurred on Sunday approximately 50 nautical miles north of Muscat in Oman, when the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker MKD Vyom, of approximately 74,000 dwt, reported on VHF channel 16 that it had been hit by an unknown projectile above the waterline. The impact caused a fire on board the vessel, which has been brought under control. However, according to TradeWinds, a seaman in the engine room was killed.
Authorities are investigating the incident, while they have issued a warning to passing vessels to sail with increased caution and report any suspicious activity immediately.
At the same time, a tanker belonging to the United Arab Emirates, which is on the sanctions list, was attacked – most likely by drones – resulting in the injury of four crew members.
