In a period of intense geopolitical realignments in Greece’s wider neighborhood, relations between Athens and New Delhi are acquiring particular strategic importance, among other things, in the field of defense.
The region is characterized by shifting alliances, regional rivalries and efforts to establish new axes of influence, which makes bilateral cooperation crucial for stability and peace.
Within this context, Greece and India are strengthening their strategic dialogue and the military relations between the two states are entering a new phase, something that was reflected, among other things, in the recent trip of the Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias.
It is certain, as noted by competent sources, that the two countries “perceive each other as strategic partners also at the military level” in a constantly changing international environment, particularly in the Middle East region.
In this context, “the successive visits reflect a firm political will for strategic deepening. Greece and India seem to be building an axis of cooperation that acquires characteristics of long-term strategic convergence”.
“The defense and military alliance of Greece – India, although independent, should also be seen in the broader context of the planning of the alliance of the two countries with Israel”, the same sources noted.
At the same time, the defense relations between Greece and India are on a steady and multi-level trajectory of deepening, with successive high-level visits, the signing of Military Cooperation Programs and the intensification of joint activities on land, air and sea.
The Navies of the two countries have already developed substantial communication channels through joint training and joint exercises, recognizing the importance of maritime security, the protection of sea lanes of communication and freedom of navigation.
As competent sources pointed out, “the Greek naval experience in the Mediterranean and the Indian presence in the Indian Ocean create a field of mutual strategic interest.”
