The Greek-owned fleet, which according to the latest data from the Union of Greek Shipowners represents 19.1% of global transport capacity, is a strategic pillar of the economies of Europe, the USA and China.

A guarantor of energy and food security, the president of the Union, Melina Travlou, has recently stated when speaking about the position of shipping in Europe.

Regarding energy products, raw materials and cereals. Greeks control over 26% of tankers and 23% of LNG carriers. Almost one in four ships carrying energy products is in “Greek hands”. But also 16% of bulk carriers, which transport raw materials and cereals.

This position is fully recognized by the partners of Greek shipping. Both the USA and China.

Relations with China

The new director of the Chinese Classification Society in Greece, Cui Yuwei, stressed two days ago that Greek-owned ships carry more than 20% of China’s cargo. Approximately 50% of the transport of energy cargoes, such as crude oil, refined products and natural gas, related to China’s imports and exports, is carried out by Greek ships, he added.

At the same time, the Greeks are perhaps the best customer of Chinese shipyards. The Greek orderbook currently exceeds 750 ships of all types, with most of them (about 65%) being built in Chinese shipyards.

The contribution to the US

But also for the other side of the Atlantic, the contribution of Greek-owned shipping is of strategic importance.

The most characteristic statement was made a few years ago by a Nasdaq representative at an event of the Propeller Club of Piraeus.

As Erick Diaz said, the direct and indirect contribution of Greek-owned shipping to the US economy amounted to 1 trillion dollars in 2021.

But even in today’s reality, the US government gives particular importance to Greek shipping, in order to promote its energy planning.

As the US Ambassador to Athens Kimberly Guilfoyle has stated, shipping functions as a stable pillar of understanding and joint initiatives between the two countries.
