Capital Maritime & Trading has placed a new order for new VLCCs, worth a total of approximately 1.4 billion euros, at a time of high freight rates and intense market activity.
The company, owned by Evangelos Marinakis, is said to have agreed with Chinese shipyard Hengli Heavy Industry for 11 ships, a development revealed in a filing by parent company Songfa Ceramics to the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The price per ship ranges between 113 million and 133 million dollars.
VLCCs are currently the preferred type of tanker, due to the aging global fleet and increased demand.
The new contract brings Capital’s VLCC orders at the shipyard to 17 units, including the “Aristotelis II” (306,000 dwt), which the company has just taken delivery of.
