A project of high strategic importance for the country and the energy transition of maritime transport begins to be implemented with the study, procurement, installation, testing and commissioning of three passenger/ro-ferry (P/C-O/C) ship power supply systems from land (Onshore Power Supply – OPS) in the port of Igoumenitsa.

The contract for the construction of the project was signed by the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO) with the company Paralos S.A., marking a decisive step towards the modernization and environmental upgrading of the country’s port infrastructure.

This flagship project concerns the construction, within the next 18 months, of two 3 MVA power stations and one 0.5 MVA OPS power station in the port of Igoumenitsa.

The new infrastructure will allow E/C-O/C vessels to deactivate their auxiliary engines when docking and be powered directly from the electricity distribution network.

Upon completion of the project, the docked vessels will significantly reduce their emissions of gaseous pollutants, as well as the noise caused by the operation of their engines, contributing substantially to the improvement of the quality of life of the residents of Igoumenitsa and to the environmental upgrading of the wider area.

The project is co-financed at a rate of 85% by the Connecting Europe Facility program of the European Union (Grant No.:101122898 – 22-EL-TC-ALFION-INFRA) and is implemented in collaboration with the Port of Igoumenitsa Authority (POI), the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), and the private companies Protasis, WMG and Hydrus.

The implementation of the project is part of the broader European strategic plan for climate neutrality, as reflected in the “European Green Deal” and the “Fit for 55” package of legislative initiatives, which aim to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate the decarbonization of transport.

HEDNO emphasized that it remains committed to its mission of operating, maintaining and developing the Distribution Network, ensuring transparent and impartial access to all users.

At the same time, it acts as a catalyst for the green transition and innovation in the Greek electricity grid.
