The message that so-called alternative fuels, such as LNG, methanol, ammonia, and even wind propulsion, remain in the “game” of the energy transition, with no clear winner, was sent by Jason Stefanatos, director of Global Decarbonization at DNV Maritime.
Speaking on a related podcast, Stefanatos analyzed the data, which shows that the postponement of a decision on the IMO Net-Zero framework has unevenly affected shipowners. Companies with clear commercial incentives to decarbonize, mainly in containerships, continued their investments, while others chose a wait-and-see attitude due to regulatory uncertainty.
The course of orders in 2026 will depend largely on the decisions of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and especially the MEPC 84 meeting to be held in April.
