The coming year is expected to be decisive for the new international airport in Kastelli, as the project enters its final stretch.
According to the plan, the airport will be completed in 2026, while another key milestone is expected in the last quarter of the year: the selection of the contractor for the air navigation equipment. This is a project that, upon its commencement of operation, will become the second largest airport in the country.
The road to test flights
2027 has already been set as the next big step. Test flights are planned to take place, paving the way for the start of normal operations of the new international airport, gradually replacing the existing Nikos Kazantzakis Airport.
Ambition for an aviation hub
Kasteli Airport aspires to become an aviation hub for the entire Eastern Mediterranean.
Indicative of the dynamics of Crete is the image of the current Heraklion airport: in November, passengers increased by 9.2%, reaching 245,969, compared to the same month of the previous year.
Works in an advanced stage

and the majority of the remaining buildings.
The 7-level terminal, with a total area of 93,000 sq m, is in an advanced stage, as well as the Control Tower.
The 3.2 kilometer runway has already been completed.
The new road connection with VOAK has been implemented at a rate of more than 85%, with the exception of a section where a tunnel of approximately 3 kilometers is being constructed.
