Visa: 20% more Greeks traveled abroad in the first nine months

The number of Greek travelers abroad increased by almost 20% in the first 9 months of 2025, compared to the same period in 2024, according to Visa data. The data showed that, during the same period, total spending also increased by 20%.

The increase in the number of travelers was more pronounced during the summer months (June, July, August), when it exceeded 20%, while total spending increased by 25% in the same period.

Over 80% of spending in Europe

Greek travelers seem to prefer mainly destinations in Europe. According to Visa data, over 80% of total cross-border spending was recorded in the EU, while the five destinations most frequently visited by Greeks are: Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Turkey. Regarding the destinations with the greatest increase in travelers during the nine months (January – September 2025), Egypt recorded an increase of over 80%, while Japan approximately 70%. They are followed by Albania, the United Arab Emirates and Slovenia.

Top Spending Categories

The data showed that the top five spending categories for Greeks were: restaurants, food and groceries, accommodation, clothing and accessories, and retail stores. The top five destinations in terms of spending were: Italy, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain.

Spending Trends by Destination

According to Visa data, there are differences in consumer behavior across the top five destinations. In Italy, 20% of total spending is directed towards the “clothing and accessories” category, a higher percentage than the average for the rest of the countries (12%). In Germany, spending on food and groceries was almost double the average. In France, consumers spend 3% more than average on entertainment. Finally, in the United Kingdom, purchases in department stores are up 4% compared to the average.
