The Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Vassilis Kikilias underlined the key role of shipping, port infrastructure and insularity in the development path of the Greek economy.
Kikilias was addressing the parliament plenary in the context of the debate on the 2026 state budget, while presenting the Ministry’s strategic and financial planning for the coming years.
“Investments in shipping and port infrastructure are, in my opinion, a great opportunity for the Greek economy to grow,” he emphasized.
Contribution of shipping and port infrastructure
The Minister, speaking about the contribution of shipping and port infrastructure to the overall transformation of the Greek economy, he noted:
“I sincerely believe and see that the sea is a comparative advantage for our homeland and our compatriots. Insularity, too.
In the past, cities built around the sea and equipped with ports, as well as islands with their infrastructure, were able to support trade and, many years later, tourism.
Shipping led the country to greatness in the past. We must turn again to the professions and the ecosystem that can be built around the sea, the ports, the islands and the cities that are washed by it. These can give the Greek economy a comparative advantage, better paid jobs and be an answer to the anxieties of the next generation, giving them optimism and hope for the future, here in our country.
Greek ocean-going shipping is the first in the world and shows the way for how we can organize the ecosystem around it, even better.”
