Greece’s electricity distribution network operator HEDNO has secured European Commission funding for six new research projects under the Horizon Europe programme, expanding its participation in EU-backed innovation initiatives.
The projects are currently in the contracting phase and are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026. Through the initiatives, HEDNO will collaborate with distribution system operators (DSOs), universities, research institutes and companies across Europe to develop and pilot new technologies for electricity distribution networks.
The company said the projects will strengthen its presence in European research programmes while creating new opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing and the testing of innovative solutions under real operating conditions.
“Through its participation in the new Horizon Europe projects, HEDNO is further strengthening its contribution to Europe’s research efforts for the distribution grids of the future,” the company said. “At the same time, it gains access to new knowledge and advanced technologies, which it evaluates in real operating conditions, supporting the digital transformation, resilience and modernisation of Greece’s electricity distribution network.”
The projects focus on three strategic areas shaped by the energy transition, as rising renewable energy generation, electric vehicle adoption, energy storage and greater consumer participation reshape the role of electricity distribution operators.
The six projects will primarily address:
- Generative artificial intelligence (AI)
- Digital substations
- Energy communities
