Significant investment interest is recorded in the data center sector with the relevant 19 requests for connection to the IPTO transmission system reaching a total capacity of 1.1 GW by October 2025.
In particular, as Marina Tsili, an IPTO executive, emphasized, among others, in a relevant presentation in the context of the 32nd Session of the Greek CIGRE Committee, the Operator has proceeded to grant Final Connection Offers, with a total capacity of 315 MW, while requests with a total capacity of 873.5 MW remain under consideration, with the majority of these concerning the Attica region, namely 13 out of the 19.
According to the data, the relevant projects in Attica reach a portfolio of around 275 MW, with another 565 MW following in the connection study stage.
The remaining requests are divided into 1 in Corinth with a Final Connection Offer and a total capacity of 40 MW, 4 in Kozani-Florina, a total capacity of 108.5 MW, at the connection study stage, and one request in Larymna, a total capacity of 200 MW, also at the connection study stage.
Although the relevant requests appear limited for the time being, this is expected to change, with all estimates calling for a significantly increased penetration of such units in electrical systems worldwide, which in turn creates significant challenges for the operation of the system.
The main issues to be resolved concern their location, with the preferred areas being those located close to telecommunications nodes, as well as load management, with the relevant “sizes” far exceeding the current consumption loads.
