Greece has passed the first “test” in implementing the European Union’s new Pact on Migration and Asylum, with the European Commission positively assessing the country’s adaptation to the new rules.

In its first assessment, the Commission said Greece has begun moving away from previous practices and is showing readiness to implement the new European framework, while a similarly positive picture was recorded for Cyprus and Spain.

More specifically, the Commission’s evaluation covers the first three weeks of implementation of the Pact, which entered into force on June 12, 2026, and examines whether member states facing increased migratory pressure can comply with the new rules on the transfer of responsibility for examining asylum applications.

According to the Commission, member states have made significant progress in preparing for and managing the relevant procedures.

What the report says about Greece

In its assessment of Greece, the Commission highlights:

  • the proper integration of the Pact into national legislation,
  • the country’s operational readiness in managing migration flows,
  • the implementation of border procedures ensuring the swift examination of asylum applications and the effective execution of returns,
  • operational readiness at all levels, with specific reference to managing increased migratory pressure on Crete,
  • the upgrading of security systems and the strengthening of human resources.

The report also recognises as significant progress the reforms implemented over the past year, confirming the country’s readiness to apply the new European framework.
