METLEN has successfully completed the “first fire” at the 560 MW Grudziądz combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant in Poland, a key milestone in the construction of the facility being developed for CCGT Grudziądz LLC, a subsidiary of Energa, part of the ORLEN Group.
The successful first ignition marks the beginning of the final testing and commissioning phase ahead of the plant’s full commercial operation. According to METLEN, the milestone was achieved safely under controlled conditions and in the presence of ORLEN’s senior management, underscoring its significance for all stakeholders.
The achievement was followed by another major step towards completion of the project, with the generator successfully synchronized to Poland’s national electricity grid.
One of Poland’s largest power plants
The Grudziądz CCGT plant is one of Poland’s largest power generation facilities and is designed to supply electricity to up to 1 million households, while making a significant contribution to the country’s decarbonisation efforts and energy security.
The highly flexible combined-cycle natural gas plant is designed to operate efficiently alongside renewable energy sources, helping reduce carbon dioxide emissions while ensuring a reliable electricity supply.
At peak construction, the project employed nearly 1,000 workers on site. To date, more than 33,000 cubic metres of concrete, 4,200 tonnes of reinforcing steel, 6,500 tonnes of structural steel, 500 tonnes of piping, and almost 900 kilometres of cabling have been installed.
METLEN said delivering a project of this scale required precision, engineering expertise and close cooperation among all parties involved.
The company said the milestone demonstrates its proven capability to deliver large-scale energy infrastructure projects safely and responsibly. METLEN also thanked its consortium partner Siemens Energy and CCGT Grudziądz LLC for their cooperation in delivering a power plant that will play a key role in supporting Poland’s electricity system.
