The mutual commitment to strengthening cooperation between Greece and Japan was highlighted during a meeting between Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis and his Japanese counterpart Toshimitsu Motegi.

Speaking after the talks, Gerapetritis described the meeting as taking place in an extremely positive climate, saying Japan is the fourth-largest economy in the world and a global leader both in economic terms and in diplomatic influence.

“We had the opportunity to discuss bilateral issues, investment development, and sectors with significant room for growth, such as shipping, energy, culture, high technology and academic exchanges,” he said.

The two ministers also discussed regional and global geopolitical developments.

“Under extremely challenging circumstances, Greece and Japan share the same principles of an international community that operates based on rules and values, an international community that stands against revisionism and against any attempt to change the existing framework,” Gerapetritis said.

He added that the talks focused on expanding relations between the European Union and Japan, further cooperation within NATO, as well as bilateral defence cooperation.

Greece is a genuine gateway for Japan to Europe and the wider world, the Greek Foreign Minister said.

Gerapetritis also referred to issues concerning freedom and security of navigation, saying the two countries share the same approach and have agreed to further strengthen interregional cooperation.
