The new Research and Clinical Studies Centre of Vianex was inaugurated in the presence of the leadership of the Health Ministry and the Development Ministry in the industrial area of Patras.
Continuing its investment plan, Vianex opened the new centre, which cost 2.5 million euros and is located on a 3,000 sq m plot adjacent to the company’s existing factory in the area. The plant has been operating since 1999 and covers a total area of 14,000 sq m.
The research centre is staffed by 21 employees, 80% of whom are chemists, biologists and pharmacists, while the remaining 20% hold degrees in various other disciplines.
The centre will receive certification from the National Organisation for Medicines (EOF) and is expected to conduct Phase I clinical trials, a segment in which Greece has so far lagged behind, currently hosting mainly Phase II and III studies.
Vianex chairman and chief executive Dimitris Giannakopoulos said the facility places western Greece on the international research and innovation map and is expected to have a broader national impact in strengthening Greece’s position in pharmaceutical production.
The centre will use new technologies to develop a range of pharmaceutical forms, from solid tablets to capsules and ointments. More than 20 new formulations are already under development, including antibiotics such as cephalosporins.
It will also carry out clinical trials supported by artificial intelligence and bioequivalence studies.
Around 50% of the investment is financed through Vianex’s own funds, while the remaining 50% comes from Greece’s investment clawback mechanism. Giannakopoulos praised Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, saying the policy had transformed a financial burden for companies into a development tool.
