The approximately 9 billion euros generated annually in Europe through maritime emissions trading schemes should be directed not to national budgets, but toward the development of sustainable fuels and clean technologies for the European shipping industry, ECSA Secretary General Sotiris Raptis emphasized.

Speaking at the TradeWinds Shipowners Forum in Athens, Raptis stated that European shipowners are dissatisfied with the current framework and called on the European Commission to commit to withdrawing the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and FuelEU Maritime regulations should the International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopt a global net-zero emissions framework.

As he stressed, the very least that must be ensured is the avoidance of double payments. However, the fundamental question remains where these revenues are ultimately being allocated, given that, to date, they have not been sufficiently reinvested in supporting the shipping sector’s energy transition and decarbonization efforts.
