The second wave of the renewable energy revolution is increasingly about energy security rather than decarbonisation, Evangelos Mytilineos said in a LinkedIn post.

As he noted, there is still much uncertainty around the conflict in the Gulf. But one thing is already becoming very clear. The next wave of renewables will be driven not by decarbonization, but by energy security.

This is a major shift, he underlined

“Countries that depend too heavily on imported fossil fuels from unstable parts of the world are taking serious geopolitical and economic risk. Supply shocks, price volatility and insecurity of access are no longer theoretical concerns but have become part of the new reality in which we all operate.”

“A new energy wave is taking shape”

Mytilineos stated that “this is why renewables are moving to the centre of the energy discussion again – because security and resilience now matter more than ever. Together with storage and stronger grids, renewables offer countries a more balanced and secure energy system.:

He added that Metlen Energy & Metals saw this direction early. “That is why we have continued to build with conviction. In calendar 2026, we plan to install ~ 3.3 GW of solar and ~1.8GW of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in many countries around the world.

Meanwhile our global renewable energy portfolio has reached 11.9 GW, up 7% year-on-year, while, since the start of the Gulf war there has been a massive flow of new enquiries. We are already drawing up our plans for a significant boost in our M-Renewables and Energy Transition platform, which also includes grids and Data Centers.”

Concluding, he said that “a new energy wave is taking shape. This time, security is one of its strongest drivers.”
