The Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) has been systematically connecting renewable energy sources (RES) to the power system, helping to reduce wholesale electricity costs.

Through the rapid integration of new clean energy capacity and the development of modern energy infrastructure nationwide, the Operator is playing a pivotal role, as it noted, in shaping a power generation mix that is both greener and more resilient to price volatility. In 2025, the increased share of RES—reaching a new annual production record of nearly 26.2 TWh—had a significant impact on lowering average prices, even during months of particularly high demand such as August and December. This trend has continued into 2026, with Greece recording notably lower wholesale electricity prices compared with other European countries in the first ten days of March.

The country’s resilience to high wholesale electricity costs, relative to other Southeast European states, is once again confirmed by the containment of Day-Ahead Market prices, despite international developments and the sharp rise in fuel prices.

Since 2019, the expansion of grid capacity through the Operator’s projects across mainland and island Greece has enabled a multiple increase in installed RES capacity. Due to their near-zero marginal cost of generation, renewables are increasingly displacing fossil fuel units in the energy mix, often driving prices to very low levels during peak production hours.

At the same time, the growing penetration of RES in the power system is reducing the country’s reliance on imported fossil fuels—whose prices and availability fluctuate significantly depending on global developments—thereby strengthening energy independence and economic sustainability.

IPTO’s investment plan also provides for the upgrade of Greece’s interconnectivity with neighbouring countries and the wider region.

Cross-border interconnections enhance market efficiency by allowing electricity to flow from regions with surplus supply and lower prices to those with deficits and higher prices.

To maximise the benefits of RES and international interconnections, storage technologies are of critical importance.

Accelerating the deployment of storage will safeguard Greece’s export potential and enable greater utilisation of renewable energy, while curbing extreme price fluctuations and reducing the overall cost of electricity supply for consumers.
