“Another international crisis is knocking on Europe’s door, testing its reflexes,” Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou said upon his arrival at the EU Council on energy issues.
As he stressed, “energy prices touch every home, every business, every aspect of our daily lives and Europe this time must be prepared, with targeted measures and flexibilities to protect citizens and businesses. It must rise to the occasion.”
“Sixth lowest wholesale electricity price in Europe”
Papastavrou underlined that “Greece in the first ten days of March had the sixth lowest wholesale electricity price in Europe, thanks to its diversified energy mix, renewable sources and hydroelectric power plants. We are moving forward with a plan and determination”.
“We are not complacent. For energy sufficiency, price stability and the protection of citizens and the economy,” he added.
“It is time for Europe to take the next step”
Regarding the package of measures for European networks to be discussed at the EU Energy Ministers’ Council, Papastavrou stressed the importance of networks, saying that they are about achieving a single resilient interconnected Europe for the benefit of all.
“It is time for Europe to take the next step, the next leap, so that we can have for the first time a truly single electricity market in Europe, which we have not achieved so far,” the minister stressed.
