“Nothing has changed in the scope or the mandate of Operation ASPIDES,” according to sources who spoke to Naftemporiki in response to a related query, following a Financial Times report concerning the Strait of Hormuz and the possible expansion of the mission.

According to the same sources, “Operation ASPIDES continues to carry out its mandate, contributing to safeguarding the freedom of navigation within its area of operations.”

They added that “forces remain ready to adjust their activities and tasking as required, responding to developments at sea.”

“The operation is closely monitoring the situation and remains on alert. Maritime security developments in the region are being continuously assessed,” the sources concluded.

Forces deployed in the area

It is noted that Greece is participating in the mission with a MEKO-class frigate from the Hellenic Navy. Specifically, the frigate HYDRA (HN) is currently deployed in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, becoming the first Greek vessel to operate in the area.

According to Naftemporiki sources, Italy is also operating in the area with the FREMM-class frigate LUIGI RIZZO, while Germany contributes periodically with an aerial surveillance and intelligence-gathering asset in support of the mission.
