INTERCARGO expressed deep concern over the rapidly deteriorating security situation in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that the protection and wellbeing of seafarers must remain the absolute priority for international shipping.

In a statement, the association said it is closely monitoring the attacks against merchant vessels with particular concern, while also expressing sorrow over the loss of human lives. INTERCARGO conveyed its condolences to the families of the victims and highlighted the growing challenges faced by seafarers and by shore-based personnel managing operations in an increasingly unstable geopolitical environment.

Following the emergency cross-industry briefing at the International Maritime Organization held on March 11, INTERCARGO Secretary General Kostas Gkonis warned that the recent incidents demonstrate that commercial shipping near the Strait of Hormuz continues to face serious and evolving security risks.
