The European Strategy for the Shipping Industry was welcomed by the Union of Greek Shipowners, noting that the recognition of the vital role of European shipping for the EU is an essential step in a period of increased challenges for the sector.
“The Strategy comes at a critical juncture for the EU,” said the President of the Union, Melina Travlou, noting that “shipping must be at the core of the European strategy. The resilience and long-term prosperity of Europe depend on its competitiveness.”
As the Union of Greek Shipowners emphasized in its statement, shipping is not just another sector of the economy, but a crucial pillar for Europe’s energy and food security. She added that the current geopolitical and economic conditions require a coherent, holistic strategy and not fragmented policies, stating that the new initiative is called upon to strengthen the competitiveness of the sector and support its sustainable development.
She also noted that maintaining the institutional framework for European shipping to support its international competitiveness and unhindered access of shipping companies to financing are key priorities of the initiative.
