The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy sent recommendations to Greek ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz to be particularly careful of misleading instructions via VHF, increased electromagnetic interference and serious incidents of GPS jamming.
The notice comes while Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz for a few hours on Tuesday due to “security measures” for the safety of navigation, as international media reported that the Revolutionary Guard is conducting military exercises in the waterway.
The Ministry is on constant operational alert
According to information from “N”, in the context of the constant and responsible information of the Greek shipping community for any incident or development that may affect the safety of navigation, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy is on constant operational alert. The ministry collects data from local operational centers, international bodies, ships operating in the region, as well as from the international press, which it evaluates and transmits in a timely manner to the shipping community, accompanied by targeted recommendations.
The aim of this process is to provide timely warning to ships and enhance operational readiness, with the main priority being the protection of seafarers and the safe conduct of navigation in areas of increased risk.
Important oil export route
The Strait of Hormuz is the most important oil export route in the world, connecting the largest Gulf oil producers, such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates, with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
However, the recommendations mention increased incidents of electromagnetic interference and GPS jamming, which affect electronic navigation, as well as the presence of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) both in the Strait and in neighboring waters.
Under these circumstances, ships are called on to implement the Best Management Practices (BMP) manual for maritime security and to maintain increased vigilance, closely monitoring the activity of small vessels in the wider area.
At the same time, crews are advised to be ready to navigate without electronic means, if interference occurs, and to immediately inform local operational centers of any suspicious incident or technical malfunction.
These recommendations, according to the ministry, must be evaluated in conjunction with the strengthening of the naval presence in the region, but also with information from international media on the conduct of an Iranian readiness exercise called “Smart Control of Hormuz Strait”.
