The Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) announced the tender for the Converter Stations at the new Corinth-Kos direct current electrical interconnection and the new 150 kV GIS Substation in Mastichari, Kos.
According to the Operator, the budget of the project, which is part of the Dodecanese interconnection, amounts to 809.1 million euros and its award will be made based on the criterion of the most economically advantageous offer. The duration of the construction phase has been set at 48 months from the signing of the contract.
The Operator’s plan foresees the installation of the Converter Station in the Korfos area of Corinth, close to the new Corinth Extra High Voltage Center, while on Kos, in the Mastichari area, close to the landfall point of the submarine electrical cables.
The Converter Stations will incorporate Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology, similar to that used in the Crete – Attica interconnection, for the conversion of alternating current to direct current and vice versa, ensuring reliable and efficient transmission of electrical energy along the entire length of the submarine line.
Following the announcement of the tenders for the Converter Stations and the GIS Substation as well as for the submarine and terrestrial cable system, which began in December 2025, IPTO has now launched the construction of the entire second island high-voltage direct current (HVDC) interconnection that it will implement in the Greek electricity transmission system.
As emphasized by IPTO, the Corinth – Kos electrical interconnection is the first leg of the broader Dodecanese interconnection project, as it will subsequently interconnect Rhodes and Karpathos at high voltage via 150 kV alternating current (HVAC) cables.
The electrical interconnection of the Dodecanese will offer significant environmental and economic benefits by reducing the cost of electrification of the islands, as has already happened on the islands that have been interconnected by IPTO to date.
