Higher prices despite mobile phone reductions

Mobile phone prices are on a downward trend. However, they are above average when compared to those of other countries, taking into account the purchasing power of Greeks.

According to the analysis of the Greek mobile communications market for 2024, which was conducted by EETT (National Telecommunications and Post Commission) in collaboration with the Swedish company Tefficient, the Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) of mobile communications services in Greece is below the median of the corresponding prices of the other member states included in the survey.

Specifically, the ARPU in our country in 2024 was 12.7 euros and without adjusting price levels, the median price of the countries under analysis was 15.2 euros.

The 11 countries participating in the analysis were: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Spain, with a common element being their affiliation to a harmonized regulatory framework and the use of the same currency (euro).

At the same time, total revenue per Gigabyte of mobile data usage in Greece is slightly higher than the median, but shows the highest rate of decline (CAGR -33%) compared to other countries in the period 2019-2024.

Mobile data usage, per subscription and per month, continues to lag behind that of the comparison countries, although Greece recorded the largest increase in data usage, reaching 51% for the period 2019 – 2024. Indicatively, in 2024 in Greece the average usage per subscriber per month was 12.5 GB, as opposed to 31.9 GB in Austria, the country with the highest usage.

Regarding voice service, Greece records the highest usage per subscriber among the countries included in the analysis, with 288 minutes per month in 2024 and a clearly increasing trend, as the country shows the highest compound annual growth rate (CAGR +7%).

Voice service revenues (per minute) in mobile communications in Greece are close to the median value and show the largest downward trend (8%) compared to other countries in the given reference period.
